Style matters.. a lot.. but nobody told most players about it. If you want to test the importance of this kind of knowledge, you'll need to get into the studies on behavior styles. Many, if not most, teachers leave it for the golf gurus, who sometimes, regretably, ignore it themselves. The ones that don't ignore it often get it "wrong." (A very recent book that claims to tap this subject misses the mark, big time, and it was published in 2000 by a PhD). We don't know why, we just know most haven't examined the issues at all, let alone closely. If anyone tells you that you can "vary" your style, just ask them to show you the evidence. One can certainly ATTEMPT to vary style so long as that person is willing to pay a very high price in stress, energy loss and a myriad of missed shots. We will be glad to provide the evidence that verifies the benefits of staying within one's style.

Typically, we are most influenced by one, possibly a combination of two, or, infrequently, three of the styles, and that can mean tons to your game. Style is not an option. Mother Nature carries the weight here. Best case is to go with the hand you've been dealt. There are no bad ones. You can "break" or "bend" your style - if you try to use one that belongs to somebody else (unless it's exactly like yours) - or if you try, either unwittingly or intentionally to change the one you own.

Ben Crenshaw can't play like Tiger, and Tiger can't play like Justin Leonard, who can't play like Lee Trevino.

All of us are best advised to play like who we are - and that means knowing what that is and how it works.
